Hypnotherapy can help with childbirth by preparing you and your baby for as a relaxing and gentle birth as possible. It is based on the premise that much of the pain and discomfort of childbirth is associated with stress, anxiety and worry. This can be eliminated through self-hypnosis, relaxation and breathing techniques.
Our subconscious controls many of the automatic processes like blinking and breathing as well as anxiety and fear. Fear and anxiety regarding labor is common and you can retrain the subconscious through the process of hypnotherapy to respond in a positive fashion. So for example, instead of anticipating pain, therefore causing our muscles to tense, you can instead anticipate calm, relaxed and controlled pressure surges.
Ideally it is good to start sessions around 6 to 7 months into your pregnancy, although some like to start earlier and some much later. Even those who only have time for one session can benefit enormously. As with any technique it’s important to put in as much practice as you can in order to gain the most.
