Taking Time Out for Yourself

It can be easy to fall into the trap of feeling overwhelmed. Just look at all the pressures of today, half your day working, rushing home, preparing something to eat, sorting out any bills, maybe catching an hour of TV, dealing with relationships, friends, family, personal issues, your health. The list goes on and on.

If we are unable to relax it can lead to weight gain, increased feelings of anxiety and depression, and issues with relationships.

Remaining positive and upbeat under pressure can be quite a challenge. The good news is that there are things you can do to regain control, get things done and still enjoy your free time.

Take small steps. If you are feeling overwhelmed, take 5 minutes to stop, close your eyes, and imagine a relaxing holiday destination. See the sights, hear the sounds and feel the feelings of actually being there. Just doing this has the effect of calming down your nervous system and allowing everything to settle down.

Look at your life realistically. Are there parts of your life that you’re putting in more than you’re getting out? Can they be cut down on? Do you need to watch the latest TV show or can you instead use that as time for yourself? Do you need to respond to every email and message you get or can you leave that for one go later in the day.

It can be daunting to think about making time for yourself. What’s important is that you make yourself a priority in your life, rather than others. When you can balance work and play it will make your life that much more enjoyable.
